Barley Straw Products For Small Ponds

Barley straw is an age-old remedy for pond algae problems and it has a long history of effective and safe use.

For many small pond owners, barley may be worth a try to see if it will lead to better pond algae control.  Barley based products today come in several forms.  You can still find  pure dried barley straw, along with a liquid barley concentrate, or compacted barley pellets.

All forms of barley work in a similar fashion.  As the barley straw breaks down and decays it releases a substance that converts into a light form of hydrogen peroxide.  This can help to minimize algae from forming.

University studies show that barley works best as a deterrent rather than a treatment for existing algae blooms, however many pond owners will testify that they've had algae disappear after a treatment.  We suggest using barley straw and giving it at least several weeks in the pond before an algaecide be tried.
