Barley Straw For Ponds

For many years now, barley straw has been used in England and Europe to help with pond algae control. It's a time tested, natural, and safe option for those that do not want to use chemicals in their ponds.

Before using barley however, a few things need to be kept in mind.

As the straw decays, it releases several compounds into the water that are specifically toxic to new algae growth. Humic acid is one of those compounds.

Research at several major universities in the U.S. have indicated that barley does have some ability to retard algae growth. It is less effective if algae already exists but it may provide a way to halt further growth.

One advantage of most barley products is the potential longevity of the treatment. Barley straw in particular can take several months to decay and active control is possible during that time.

In recent years several new barley based products have emerged including liquid barley concentrates and barley pellets. In addition, some barley and beneficial bacteria combination formulas work with a two-pronged approach to limit algae growth.

All are viable options for pond owners of all sizes of ponds.
