Algae Control For Small Ponds

Smaller ponds, or those that you might find in your backyard, can be particularly challenging when it comes to algae control. Algae problems can be common in ponds like this since it's so easy to get overstocked on fish. Fish waste is very helpful to algae and it's growth.

Treating algae in smaller ponds must also be done carefully to ensure that fish can be kept safe, while algae is brought under control.

One of our top recommendations for small pond owners is to add plants, and in particular those that might float on the surface which can be very helpful in blocking abundant sunlight, and we also suggest using beneficial bacteria to help keep the pond cleaner and nutrients (those that might feed algae) down. With plants and bacteria in place, you might very well be able to control algae with these alone.

Pond vacuums and muck vacs are very useful at keeping your pond cleaner and this reduces any organic build up that might occur. Organics in your pond are another major algae supporter so limiting this will be of great help.

If algae continues to prove problematic there are other products, such as algaecides that can treat algae directly. Products like Algae-Off and Algae Fix are our top choices.
